murderbot: (Going in)

Are you still there?

[It's a good thing that the new portals near San Fransokyo are in rural areas, because what's coming out of the north lab isn't friendly.

There's a storm of microbots, sounding like metallic hail as they rain out of the portal, followed by the thunder of a large, solid chunk of metal hitting the ground.

While the microbots litter the floor, unsure of what to do next, they have no orders to follow, the larger figure stands up straight, to their full height somewhere a little north of six feet tall.

Baymax is sure to have been on the news, but people would be forgiven if they didn't recognize what the portal spat out as Baymax. He's covered head-to-toe in pieces of concrete and metal, with spikes of glass interspersed throughout, looking something like a collapsing building come to life. The only signs of Baymax visible are his chip port, covered by a single panel of glass, and the glass in his helmet, giving him a space for his red eyes to see out of.

He's back from his time in the world beyond the portals, armored by the microbots from the remains of the buildings that had been pulled in as well.

If there's anyone in the lab, he ignores them. A quick scan had revealed that they were not his target.

Without the Hiro-created helmet, he doesn't have access to the advanced scanning technology the boy had installed, so he's going to have to search the city as he follows the last command he was given.

"Do it, Baymax. Destroy him!"]

[he may still be a bit under the weather, so to speak, but that's never really stopped Callaghan from getting things done in the past. though his schedule was a bit...different, back then. he wasn't switching to a nocturnal routine, for instance, but here he is just past midnight crouched on the edge of the roof like some sort of movie action hero.

but he's no hero, is he? heroes don't wait for trucks en route to deliveries, and they probably don't make a leap on to said truck's roof when it passes. the ever-helpful microbots kill whatever momentum might have caused injury, and secure him in position before he starts moving forwards, making a vague hand gesture once the vehicle slows to a stop-

-and out goes the driver. Callaghan isn't necessarily planning on hurting him, but he /does/ need him out of the picture for a few minutes while he has another set of microbots open up the truck's door. he doesn't say a single word, doesn't give a single glance to the hapless man currently pinned to one of the truck's tires by black metal 'ropes', he's only concerned with getting what he needs and getting out of here quickly.

he'd have let this be delivered, but then security would have been unacceptable. this will have to do.]

[the distant commotion registers faintly on Callaghan's mental radar, but only as something along the lines of good, there's a distraction. gives him just a bit more time to rustle through the shelves here and find what he's looking for, and- there, a small box about a foot wide. the microbots grab it for him and he turns to go, putting a hand on the side of the vehicle frame

and pausing.

what is that noise?

he glances out and around, microbots pulling back towards him in preparation of great movement- and then they still. because /he/ is still, not fully understanding what that- that thing approaching is, but whatever it is, it doesn't look- human? no, that's not the word he's looking for.

he can't think of words.

he doesn't even need to think for the microbots to push him towards the roof of the vehicle. by the time he turns around, the - behemoth - has gotten closer, so he's throwing out a hand to strike at it because at least he has the higher ground and can an idea of what's coming after him

but why does he have a feeling of deja vu?]

[it's not stopping. it's showing not even any hesitation, punching through, and that deja vu intensifies even if this is- he's never seen something like this. not wearing metal and concrete and he needs to pull back the microbots before he's out.

there's always a few that remain by him, on him - ever since losing his coat at the dock he's hardly ever without any upon his form, as though they're continually trying to remind them of their presence - but with the majority split off in that attack, he needs to move before he charges the truck.

adrenaline beginning to kick in, he pulls back the rest that were holding the driver and makes a run towards the front of the vehicle. by the time he reaches it, the microbots on him have moved to his feet, giving him another push in to the air- and there's enough in position for him to grab on to, hitting the building's wall and hoisting him on to the fire escape properly. he only spares a single glance back before beginning to climb, a cluster of the bots securing the box on his back like the straps of a backpack.]

[what-?

Robert glances down again, eyes widening behind his mask as he sees it climbing. the fact that it's punching handholds is demonstration enough of its power, and he doesn't bother hauling himself up; he lets the microbots do it for him at this point, a healthy dose of unease lending speed.

that's not human. that can't be human. who in their right mind-? he tries sending another punch of microbots, hoping that maybe he can dislodge whatever this is back on to the concrete, and maybe he can get a better idea of what he's dealing with if he can knock off some of whatever passes for armor off of it

because really, he shouldn't be feeling so concerned. he has the microbots. he can face practically anything, for better or worse.

...

that shouldn't seem like an attempt to reassure himself.]

[no, really. what?

it's not /unaffected/ by the microbots, not entirely as far as he can tell, but it's still enduring them in a manner that's a bit unsettling. the ones still by him shift and twitch, betraying his unease, even as he breaks off the attack to pull himself fully up on to the roof. a shrugging roll of his shoulders to adjust his spoils, and he's leaning back over to get a better look-

-and then he catches sight of red optics behind glass, and then everything goes very still.

his eyes move down to- chest. circular port. it follows other lines as the armored beast continues its climb, the microbots now outright starting to writhe, and then snapping towards the figure again without any prompting at all.

threat. response. even as Callaghan takes a step back away from the edge, because-

what is this?]

[it isn't even slowing down. Baymax isn't even slowing down. all thoughts of programming and where the hell is Hiro? aside, there is a deliberate menace about him, one Robert isn't going to stay around for. standing his ground?

not here. not now.

with that decided, he's already turning around, the microbots once more pulling back from Baymax to give him speed, momentum- and a hand when it comes to leaping for that next rooftop. he /could/ stick to the streets, but with the need for stealth as of late, higher ground has advantages he can't deny. at this point, though, Callaghan would be happy with some large /distance/]

[Callaghan glances over his shoulder as he slows to a stop on the next roof, trying to determine if he's gotten that distance-

-and nope. it's considering. he doesn't know the specifics of Baymax's programming, but he knows enough to know that Tadashi had originally programmed it with enough to understand and overcome obstacles, and Baymax is looking as though he's already getting an idea of how to solve this and that means

that Callaghan has to run.

and run he does, leaping over the rooftops, the rush of fear-fueled adrenaline lending him strength and speed. he is not going to stay for this.]
